HCG is a hormone utilized in boys (prior to puberty) to facilitate the proper descent of the testicles into the scrotum. Additionally, it is employed in certain boys to support normal sexual maturation. Its function involves prompting the testes to produce male sex hormones (such as testosterone).

Fertigyn, which contains HCG, is also administered to women for addressing fertility issues. It is provided following the completion of another treatment (menotropins) to trigger the release of an egg (ovulation). This medication should not be used by women whose ovaries are no longer capable of producing eggs effectively (primary ovarian failure). Furthermore, there is no evidence that this medication is effective for weight loss, and it should not be utilized for that reason.
